About the DataWe compiled several data sources for the MapPlanet service:
National Geospatial-Intelligence AgencyNames of places outside USA and Antarctica
This dataset is the official repository of foreign place-name decisions approved by the US BGN. Approximately 20,000 of the database's features are updated monthly. Since we at MapPlanet will update this data resource only once a year, it may be a good idea to check their site if a name is not found in our service. Although we tried to compile the data with great care, MapPlanet takes no responsibility for any errors which may have occurred during the compilation.
Toponymic information is based on the Geographic Names Data Base, containing official standard names approved by the United States Board on Geographic Names and maintained by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. More information is available at the Products and Services link at www.nga.mil. The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency name, initials, and seal are protected by 10 United States Code Section §445.
U.S. Geological SurveyNames of places in USA and Antarctica
Datasets of the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) are included too.
The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), developed by the USGS in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information for almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States and its territories. The Federally recognized name of each feature described in the data base is identified, and references are made to a feature's location by State, county, and geographic coordinates. The GNIS is our Nation's official repository of domestic geographic names information.
The GNIS also contains information on geographic names in Antarctica which are approved by the BGN for use by the Federal Government.
